In a general sense, it can be said that a Protected Geographic Indication is the name of a region or determined place that serves to designate a product originating in that region or place and whose products’ reputation is attributed to that specific place of origin.

In other words, for a product to benefit from the P.G.I., it has to demonstrate its link with the geographic location in at least one of the stages of production, in the production or the manufacturing, that is to say, it has to demonstrate that at least one part of its production process originates in the place that gives it its name and that it has a reputation associated with that region, in by which manner it is possible to unify some of the characteristics of the product to the land, climate, animal breeds or plant varieties or to the common knowledge of the peoples of the said region.
